On October 14, 2017, the East Lyme Auxiliary of Child and Family Agency and Bank Square Books of Mystic will proudly present for the fourth Celebrity Author Luncheon, Ann Hood-bestselling author of over 14 novels.

Ms. Hood is an American novelist, short story writer, and writer of nonfiction.  In addition to her fourteen novels, she has published three memoirs, a short story collection, a ten book series for middle readers and one young adult novel.

In 2002, Hood suffered a major tragedy, the death of her five-year-old daughter Grace, which she chronicled in the memoir Comfort: A Journey Through Grief, published in 2008. The effects of this loss were profound, and for two years she was unable to write or even read. In 2014, after having experienced a divorce, Anne’s life took an unexpected turn when she re-connected with author Michael Ruhlman.  The story of their courtship and subsequent marriage could be the basis of a romance novel.

Hood, who was born in West Warwick, Rhode Island, now lives in Providence with her husband Michael and their children, Annabelle and Sam.

As an added feature, Michael Ruhlman will also take part in the presentation. A graduate of Duke University, Michael is a well-known author who has written non-fiction books with various chefs.  “The Making of a Chef” and “The Reach of a Chef” are two of his forays behind the curtain into the world of those who love to prepare food for the enjoyment of others.  When they first met, Michael confided to Ann, “I want to write fiction.”  She encouragingly told him, “You will”. Ann and Michael will both discuss their latest books and their writing processes.  They will also have their books available for purchase at the event.

Anne’s latest novel, The Book That Matters Most, will especially delight all of those who have ever received enjoyment and comfort from a book club. The main character, Ava, a middle-aged French professor is dealing with the newly discovered infidelity of her husband and the life-crises affecting her daughter, Maggie.  Ava finds the emotional help she desperately needs in book club members she meets and the books they choose “that matter most”.  For those who love the written word, it is a reminder of its power to console a troubled soul.

The event, at the Community Center in East Lyme, has been organized by Diane McCue, Karen Zoller, and Mary Mirabito.  It will take place from 11:30 a.m. – 2 p.m.  In addition to the presentation by Ms. Hood, there will be a Luncheon catered by Best of Everything Country Gourmet of Niantic and desserts made by members of the Auxiliary.  There will also be a Book Signing and Basket Raffle.

Tickets for the Luncheon will include a copy of her most recent novel, The Book that Matters Most.  Tickets will be $35 in advance and $40 at the door.  Tickets are on sale at Bank Square Books, Mystic; The Book Barn, Niantic; Dime Bank, East Lyme; The Bowerbird, Old Lyme.  For Information and Reservations-860-443-2896.

All profits from the event will support the Child and Family Agency in its many projects to assist children and families in need of services in mental health and physical healthcare, child abuse prevention, the treatment of family violence, teen pregnancy, childcare,  and parent education.
