Holiday Newsletter from Bank Square Books

"Independent businesses house independent minds that make different choices based on their creative, ear-to-the-ground mindset.  And it is these choices that make a community interesting, diverse and attractive."
~Sylvia Wyant, Boulder CO

By Annie on Jul 20, 2011 | Add a Comment

I was dismayed by some of the comments in today’s article with people saying they will drive to Warwick to shop at a Barnes & Noble or buy on-line from Amazon.  Please remember to support your locally owned and fiercely independent bookstore located in downtown Mystic, Bank Square Books.

Just Out Today - Keith Scribner's The Oregon Experiment

By Jennifer on Jun 14, 2011 | Add a Comment

Though set in Oregon, the themes and sensuality of The Oregon Experiment are universal, and readers anywhere will relate to the deep characters and lush description of setting and culture. I don’t say this lightly: I’ll be reading this book again within the year.

Europa Editions is Hotter Than Ever at 100

By Jennifer on May 26, 2011 | Add a Comment

Europa Editions is a state of mind. When I first started working at Bank Square Books, Elegance of the Hedgehog had been on the Indiebound bestseller list for months, and it was clear that something is different about this book. A particular version of a text that has been revised or created from a substantially new setting of type : a first edition.

An Interview with Mira Bartok About Life and The Memory Palace

By Jennifer on Feb 25, 2011 | Add a Comment

It’s easy to begin reading Mira Bartok’s The Memory Palace with a few expectations.  It is a memoir, after all.  And she did have a schizophrenic mother.  And a brain injury.  But to read this book with any of those preconceptions will sell both book and reader short.

I had the opportunity to chat with Ms. Bartok about The Memory Palace and  her life; she will be reading and signing at our store, Bank Square Books of Mystic, next week.

Annie's Thoughts on What Borders' Bankruptcy Means for the Rest of Us

Annie's Thoughts on What Borders' Bankruptcy Means for the Rest of Us

By Annie on Feb 24, 2011 | Add a Comment

I have been doing a lot of thinking in this aftermath of Borders filing for bankruptcy and what it means for Bank Square Books and the book business as a whole.  Please read the message below and send me any of your thoughts and input, or just give a call if you want to talk.  We need your comments and questions. Some initial reactions about the Borders' bankruptcy filing are that this is the best thing for independent bookstores that has ever happened.  False.  Or that more and more people will flock to their local indies to buy more books. Not necessarily.
