Holiday Newsletter from Bank Square Books

"Independent businesses house independent minds that make different choices based on their creative, ear-to-the-ground mindset.  And it is these choices that make a community interesting, diverse and attractive."
~Sylvia Wyant, Boulder CO

Dear Loyal Customers,

Thank you for your loyal and consistent patronage at Bank Square Books during the construction this fall.  We all know that when completed the Streetscape will look beautiful and we will have a lovely park in front of the store where you can sit and read your newly purchased books.

We have a few changes at the bookstore that we would like to bring to your attention to make holiday shopping even easier.

  • with a free download of the BLIO app, we now sell ebooks from our websitewww.banksquarebooks.com for any device EXCEPT a Kindle. Ebooks for a Kindle are ONLY, I repeat, ONLY available from Amazon, the nemesis of all independent businesses.  If you are thinking of buying an eReader please do NOT buy a Kindle if you want to support your local bookstore.  Ask us for advice.
  • The holiday catalog from the New England Independent Bookseller's Association is being delivered with the New London Day on Tuesday, November 22.  If you do not receive The Day we have copies here at the store and soon on our website.  There is also a table display with these selected books at the store.
  • As always, we offer free shipping or personal home delivery on all books.  We sell gift cards, and will wrap any book for free with the gorgeous papers Jane has picked for this season.
  • If you have not already done so, please join our free Frequent Buyer Program where until January 1, 2012 for every $100 you spend at the store (gift cards excluded) you receive a $10 coupon.  After January 1, the amount increases to $200 for a $10 coupon. Just ask one of our staff to sign you up, for free.

What do we offer that Amazon does not?

  • supporting (local) authors with book signings at the store
  • keep money in the local community thereby keeping the merchants healthy and collecting sales tax for Connecticut
  • offer personal customer service and staff suggestions
  • sell books at community events where we donate 20% of sales back to the organization
  • facilitate in-store book groups

We love talking with you and making suggestions for you, a gift for a friend or spouse, or hand selecting books for your kids or grandchildren.  Our staff spends much of their free time reading in order to make these personal suggestions for you.  Please don't be an 'iPhony' by coming in and asking for help and suggestions or writing down titles only to go buy them from Amazon.  We know when this happens.

Despite the construction, eBooks, Amazon, and the demise of Borders, Bank Square Books is still an anchor store of downtown Mystic and feeling healthy.  Please continue to keep us healthy and thriving into the New Year by shopping locally and following Harvard Bookstore's motto:

"Find it here, buy it here, keep us here."

Happy Holidays and thank you,

Annie Philbrick

Patience Banister
all the staff at Bank Square Books
and, of course, Charlie the dog
