I inhaled this book! And my vocabulary just grew exponentially. I was looking up so many words, so curious about what they meant. And I mean that in a good way! Loved this so much! And the women. I can just picture Marie on her steed galloping through the countryside.

This book is fascinating and will change the way you look at a forest or clear cut of timber. A memoir told like a scientist, this is so good. I couldn't put it down. I'll be digging under every Douglas Fir to find those connections to other trees.

I loved ZORRIE. It is hard to concentrate to read these days but I read this page by page and fell in love with Zorrie. She reminds me a bit of Olive Kitteredge with a little more kindness and love. The novel reads like every sentence is hand-picked with such tender care; I had to stop and pause a bit to let the words sink in. Laird has done a marvelous job of setting the scene while creating such true-life characters that you can almost feel their pain and love, and other emotions.

I spent the rainy wet chilly Memorial Day weekend on Svalbard Island in the High Arctic freezing my way through this stunning novel. THE MEMOIRS OF STOCKHOLM SVEN. Early on in the novel, the character Sven is disfigured in a mining accident caused by an avalanche soon after he arrives on Svalbard, leaving an unsettled and unfulfilling life in Stockholm. The stark landscape of the Arctic Circle in right in line with the life Sven carves out, at least for awhile until her finds his own path, and friends. Elements of the island illuminate the loneliness and cold of Svalbard, enticing Sven to head out on his own even further north. Life is never quite what we think it is going to be, and in the High Arctic there are even more surprises that test every ounce of our soul. I loved this.

What an incredible read! ARIADNE by Jennifer Saint follows CIRCE, SONG OF ACHILLES and SILENCE OF THE GIRLS in a compelling and tantalizing tale of the Greek myths, immortals and gods. Women reign above the men, even when the men don't know it. Beautifully told, full of exquisite details, this novel will hypnotize you and leave you gap mouthed at the ending. It's so good.

SMILE, by Sarah Ruhl stole my heart. I wanted to save all her wisdom and humorisms into my brain so I could use them in my language. For Sarah to share so much of herself will be useful to other women who experience similar times that no one knows how to talk about. She may open some windows here.

And it's a debut! Nathan's writing is so enchanting, so illustrating in the physicality of detail, I had to breathe once after reading a few pages just to rest in their splendor. I feel like I got to know these characters, even George who was brought into his original light and goodness at the end. The main theme that keeps me reading fiction is the ability to learn about a time or place that I know nothing about. The Sweetness of Water does just this, and so much more.

Published: Spiegel & Grau - July 6th, 2021

I loved this story about a woman in the wilderness befriending a fox, reading him The Little Prince. She is a natural scientist so you feel like you are one with the land and the animals who inhabit it. She is a loner, unafraid to shoot and skin the elk, yet one who also feeds the magpies and fox egg yolks in their shells. It's not quaint, but a real story about what nature can bring to us if we just take the time to care and to look.

I loved the RAIN HERON. Magical reality sets this lovely novel apart. The rain heron is a mythical bird, perhaps, who can change the weather but at the heart of this novel is resilience, female friendship and so much more. This is a very special gem of a book.

You will not be able to put this down until the very end. And will make you angry at the territorial state employees who stall, making the dire situation even worse. Just imagine throwing whatever you can into your car and just driving. away from the house you love. It's devastating. Don't miss this book!
