Bank Square Books in Mystic and the Granite Theatre in Westerly are thrilled to present an afternoon with Brian Selznick, bestselling author of The Invention of Hugo Cabret, Wonderstruck, and his all-new book The Marvels! In this magnificent reimagining of the form he originated, two stand-alone stories—the first in nearly 400 pages of continuous pictures, the second in prose—together create a beguiling narrative puzzle.
The journey begins on a ship at sea in 1766, with a boy named Billy Marvel. After surviving a shipwreck, he finds work in the Royal Theatre in London. There, his family flourishes for generations as brilliant actors until 1900, when young Leontes Marvel is banished from the stage. Nearly a century later, Joseph Jervis runs away from school and seeks refuge with an uncle in London. Albert Nightingale's strange, beautiful house, with its mysterious portraits and ghostly presences, captivates Joseph and leads him on a search for clues about the house, his family, and the past.
Join us for an immersive theater experience like the one from The Marvels in a theater that resembles the Royal Theatre, where Brian Selznick will give a multimedia presentation and answer audience questions. After the event, he will meet the public and sign copies of his book at the Westerly Library.
Tickets are $10 for general admission. Tickets with a copy of the book are sold at a discounted price for $40. (The book retails for $35 after tax.)
Tickets are available through the Granite Theatre.
