Stop by Bank Square Books between 5:00 and 7:00 to have author Joanna L.C. Meyers sign a copy of The Legend of Objee: Mascot of the United States Coast Guard Academy.
From 1926 to 1984, thirty-one Objees actively engaged in the espirit de corps of the Academy. Many of the bears’ antics were passed down and several of the stories were preserved. This picture book celebrates the Coast Guard's beloved bear and offers historical insight as to how Objee became the mascot. Because the story takes place over many decades, great effort was placed on the historical accuracy of uniforms, buildings, training ships and the growing diversity of the corps of cadets in later years.
Author Joanna Meyers graduated from the University of Connecticut with a degree in Economics. She is the spouse of a retired Coast Guard Commander, who as a cadet, was one of the last Objee bear keepers. Joanna is also mother of a 2015 Coast Guard Academy graduate and Ensign. At one Academy football game, she proudly served as mother to the new, less objectionable, costumed mascot Objee.
