BSB: Joanna Meyers (The Legend of Objee) Book Signing

Meet the author and one of the last real bear keepers!

In The Legend of Objee, an Admiral Grandfather recounts his unforgettable bear keeping memories to his grandchildren in a bedtime story.  He weaves together true tales of past and present, and in doing so, passes the torch to future keepers of the legend of Objee.

Illustrator Robert VanKeirsbilck brings the mischievous bear to life on each page of the book and from one Objee antic to the next.

From 1926 to 1984, thirty-one Objees actively engaged in the espirit de corps of the Academy.  Many of the bears’ antics were passed down by word of mouth from one cadet to the next and several of the stories were preserved in the Coast Guard Alumni Bulletin throughout the years.  All of the tales were the inspiration for The Legend of Objee.

Because the story takes place over many decades, great effort was placed on the historical accuracy of uniforms, buildings, training ships and the growing diversity of the corps of cadets in later years.

Author Joanna L.C. Meyers, is the wife of a retired Coast Guard Commander, who was one of the last cadet bear keepers at the Academy.  Meyers’ son is 2015 CGA graduate and an Ensign.

“During the past two decades of my life as part of the Coast Guard family, I planned to write about the cherished animal mascots of the Coast Guard—beginning with Objee to cats, dogs, birds, even the icebreaker Eastwind’s penguin (my next book), but I was busy raising a young family and maintaining a career.  Four years ago, on the day I left my new swab at the Academy, I decided it was time for Objee’s tales to be penned.  I’m sure the decision had nothing to do with the need to keep my mind off my son’s swab summer,” said Meyers.
