Join us for some middle-grade magic as Savoy Bookshop and Café presents New England authors Jarrett Lerner and Kara LaReau for conversation about writing middle grade books and defying expectations. Jarrett will discuss his new book, EngiNerds and Kara will share her new book, Uncanny Express. This event is free and appropriate for all ages; the café will be open for refreshments.
The battle between boys and bots is on in this funny, fast-paced novel. A super-smart group of friends--all nerds--have been close since kindergarten. They may be brainiacs, but they're just like everyone else: they fight with one another, watch too much TV, eat Chinese food, and hate walking their dogs. Well, maybe not... because Ken's best friend Dan has been building robots. He then secretly sent one to each of the EngiNerds, never letting them know he's the mastermind. At first Ken is awed and delighted: what kid hasn't dreamed of having a robot all their own who can be their friend, clean their room, walk the dog, answer homework questions? Be careful what you wish for! Dan's robot, Greeeg, may look innocent, but his ravenous consumption of food--comestibles--turns him into a butt-blasting bot. And once the other robots 'come alive' it's up to the motley crew of EngiNerds to not only save the day, but save the planet.

About Uncanny Express
Jaundice and Kale (the Bland Sisters) are back from their adventure on the high seas, and they are settling back into a quiet life in Dullsville, just the way they like it. The tea is tepid, the oatmeal is tasteless, and the socks are ripe for darning... until Aunt Shallot shows up and reveals herself to be anything but the dull relation they were expecting. Instead, she tells her nieces she is Magique, Queen of Magic, and she's on her way to a big show and in need of two willing assistants. As Magique and the Bland sisters board the Uncanny Express, they meet a cast of mystifying characters. And when Magique goes missing, it's up to Jaundice and Kale to solve the mystery--with the help of famous detective Hugo Fromage. An inventive story in the tradition of Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express, The Uncanny Express has all the whimsy and humor that readers who are looking for an anything-but-bland adventure will love.
